5 Things I Didn’t Know about Alligators
Don’t ask me why, because they scare me to death, but there is a certain fascination that I have with alligators. So today I thought that I would look to see just how much I don’t know!!
1. Alligators first appeared about 80 million years ago! That would probably explain their appearance. So who came before them?? I’m glad you asked. Their predecessors were the Crocoylolformes and they walked the earth or what have you about 245 million years ago! Nope… didn’t know that! Source
2. Apparently they can go for months without eating! Wouldn’t want to be around when they finally decided that they were hungry. And since they usually feed at night and have eyesight comparable to an owl, I think that I will forgo any walks in the evening… just to be safe. Source
3. The next time you get a chance, take a look at the distance between an alligators eyes. Did you know that the distance in inches in proportion to the length of the animal in feet! Source
4. Here is a story that you can try to match… the largest alligator ever caught with a fishing rod weighed 279 pounds. Apparently this surprise catch took place on December of 1951! So all of you fishermen out there… I say go for it!! Source
5. Have you ever wondered about how many teeth that an alligator has? You are not going to believe this, but the answer is between 2 and 3 thousand over a lifetime. Now that’s a lot of teeth! Source
