Red Velvet Cake Recipe

by SP on August 31st, 2007

The last time we were in Florida, the lady next door came over carrying a few slices of Red Velvet Cake. I of course had to ask her for the recipe and before we left, she brought it over, handwritten on a file card.

  • 2 1/2 C. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 T. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 C. oil
  • 1 C. buttermilk
  • 2 oz. (1/4 C.) red food coloring
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

1. All the dry ingredients into a bowl.
2. Break eggs and whip with a fork.
3. Add oil and keep whipping.
4. Add to dry ingredients and continue whipping until batter is free of lumps.
5. Add buttermilk and keep stirring.
6. Pour into three buttered and floured pans Add and blend buttermilk. Pour equally into three greased and floured 8″ cake pans.

Bake in a moderate oven set at about 350° for 30 minutes. Allow cake to cool for about ten minutes and then remove from pans.
When cake is completely cooled, you can frost the layers. She went on to say that her family usually frosted the cake with cream cheese frosting, but she had gotten lazy lol and used a can of vanilla frosting.

*Tasted good to me! ;)
